Celebrating Singapore Bicentennial: 5 Singaporean Events You Mustn’t Miss!

National Day is done and dusted, but there are still many Singaporean events until the end of the year you can attend to keep your patriotic spirit alive!

2019 marks Singapore’s Bicentennial, a milestone of Singapore’s progress since our country’s founding by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819. To understand what it truly means to be a Singaporean, we can dive deep into the past and examine the and those that have shaped our country’s history.

Fret not, you needn’t pore through a dry history book for all these details! This year, there are a myriad of fun and exciting events filled with historical nostalgia and heritage perfect for you to enjoy as a family. Whether you are a local or an expat, you should experience at least one of these events!

We have compiled a list of five of the best Singaporean events in 2019 with all the details you need, so you don’t miss any of them!

Event 1: The Bicentennial Experience


Bringing events as far back as 1299 to life, the Bicentennial Experience is the highlight of all the anniversary events taking place this year!

With reverse rain, a rotating stage and a replica bunker, this multi-sensory experience allows you to relive the past in full immersion. It is composed of two parts: Time Traveler and Pathfinder. In 5 acts, the Time Traveler takes you back 700 years to the dawn of our nation in just 60 minutes. On the other hand, the Pathfinder shows you snippets of Singapore’s history through a variety of exhibits.

For those of you that have yet to take part in this amazing experience, you still have the chance to do so! The event has been extended from 1 October to 31 December 2019.

While the event is free, you will need to book your tickets on the website. Tickets (especially on weekends) sell out as soon as slots are open so book yours as soon as possible!

Event 2: BalikSG: Reflections of Singapore


BalikSG is the perfect blend of old and new. If you are a fan of Pokemon Go, you’ll be excited to know that this event makes use of the same type of mobile augmented reality!

Using the Augmented Reality Trail app (available for both Apple and Android), discover elements of the past by viewing key events such as the 1819 Treaty with your own eyes and interacting with historical characters such as Raffles himself!

Singapore River and Fort Canning Park are rich in historical significance, and there are vital spots you might have missed in the past. Just point the app are a Discovery Point you are curious about and find out all about it.

Event 3: My Dawson Heritage Tour


My Dawson Heritage Tour is part of a series of eight tours organised by My Community to promote cultural awareness in Singapore.

In 12 stops, the tour will take you through Queenstown’s evolution from a port city in 1819 to the bustling modern town it is today. You will walk down the memory lane while visiting places such as the Tanglin Barracks and the site of the 1955 Hock Lee Bus riots.

This event is all about reflecting on the past and connecting with others through shared experiences. Keen to forge a sense of understanding and community with your tour mates? This tour is for you then!

The tour is free and takes place every first weekend of the month from 6 April to 1 December 2019. You can sign up here.

Event 4: Their Arrivals & Their Contributions


We can all name Sang Nila Utama and Stamford Raffles as key figures that shaped Singapore’s destiny. But how many more of our nation’s pioneers do you know?

Find out about the lives and stories of Tan Tock Seng, whose dedication to giving back to the community we still celebrate today, Naraina Pillai, a leader in the Indian Community, and several more.

Since 1299, these individuals have contributed to the evolution of Singapore to the way we know it today. 

If you want to polish up your knowledge of Singapore’s history, here’s your chance to do so! Their Arrivals and Their Contributions runs till 31 December 2019.

Event 5: Lim Boon Keng (The Musical)


Lim Boon Keng lived through the tumultuous times, experiencing both the second World War and the Japanese Occupation. 

If his name sounds familiar, you are probably thinking about places such as Boon Keng MRT Station and Boon Keng Road. For his contributions to society, his name has been immortalised as the namesake of locations we still frequent today.

If you are a fan of theatre and history, you’ll love Lim Boon Keng (The Musical) as it delves into the life, philosophy and deeds of the national icon that played such a massive role in the development of Singapore.

The production is the only paid event on our list, but it is totally worth a watch! The musical runs from 10 to 13 October, and you can purchase tickets here.
